ANCIENT MYSTERIES + MODERN TECHNOLOGY = SOMETHING INTERESTING
Part 1
I write this now thinking with amusement of the years, my unusual youth, where I tried to reach certain states of being with what now seems to be now outdated. I say this with the full awareness and experience and knowledge of what is available today. Technology has indeed moved forward, and things are available now to make you reach certain states that easily; whereas if you lived in more ancient times, you would have had to be some kind of master, guru or adept.
I myself am not claiming to be such a being. I am simply a man, and a rather flawed and peculiar one at that. But I have had experiences most young guys have not experienced, some of those I may reveal in the course of time, some I would rather keep to myself, others I am bound to secrecy.
Starting with organised religion in my late teens, a decade ago, I began a search of sorts for something meaningful. After a brief flirtation with religion (I moved from Sunni Islam to Christianity) I was left jaded. Then came the mid nineties, and I was caught up in the madness of dance and drug culture, having peak experiences that smashed my religious beliefs, and opening up a new way of seeing things.
However, this itself can be a dead end.
You start screwing up your body.
The old phrase “Body as a temple”, although a cheesy cliche, rings true. You become spaced out. You become divorced from life … you become …wait for it … I grit my teeth when I say this … a hippy. Here in England, we call the modern day equivalents “Crusties”. Nice people to be around initially, but they start to get irritating. (I say this with no offence to crusties everywhere).
Next on my journey, I came to that corny marketplace better known as the New Age. This was something new and interesting. Spirituality without hard recreational drugs? Who would have though it? And yet, here I came across healers, psychics, tarot readers, spiritual retreats, and yoga practising, organic tofu eating new agers who wear crystals around their necks, hang dreamcatchers on their ceilings, go on and on about the aura and chakras (yawn) and show off their ability to sit in the full lotus position. I met people in this area who were much about sweetness, love and light. They were cut off from their dark sides, afraid to look at their own shadows.
Always forcing smiles and kindness and admonishing others for expressing baser emotions. While my experience with religion was like a one-night stand, and my time with drug and dance culture a brief fling, my time with the
New Age was more an ongoing affair. I learned a few things, had some interesting experiences. But then I got frustrated with Miss New Age, so I dumped her.
A man I knew then introduced me to the traditions of the ancient mystery temples. I learned about Initiation, and that, despite all the New Age spirituality that is all so prevalent in today’s society, (increasing so, as celebrities
are taking an interest) - despite the New Age fad, there have been teachings and mysteries that have been with us for millennia. It was from this point on that I started to feel a deeper personal connection to what I was exploring. This wasn’t just something I read in a 12.99 book in the Mind/Body/Spirit section of my high street book shop. Nor was this something I learned in a New Age weekend in Mount Shasta. I was starting to learn things instinctively.
I felt there was another being in me, I’ll liken it to a shadow, who started to really express its wants. The Chinese call it the Po spirit, I think the Greeks call it the Daimon - not to be confused with “demon.”
I was far from being resolved of certain issues in my personal life. I can only speak from my own perspective, but after the mess of my drug and New Age days, this really realigned me and grounded me back into my body.
I also studied the warrior philosophies of the Orient and the Toltec shamans. This also yielded great insights, and completely makes New Age spirituality, in my own eyes, redundant.
Now I’ve come upon the next step. As of recently, I have explored self hypnosis and subliminal messages, and various ways to bring ancient wisdom into the 21st century.
I’ll go more into this in part 2.
Love and light
(only joking)
